Florence Summer 2022: Pre-Departure

Two years of dreaming, planning, and a whole lot of waiting has led me to this point; I am less than one week away from my study abroad trip in Florence, Italy. My desires for traveling to Italy started at a very young age; growing up instead of the typical cartoon shows, my go-to entertainment sources included documentaries of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii or books about the upbringing and inventions of Galileo. It seemed as though many of these history narratives stemmed back to one country: Italy. Italy is a society that boasts a rich culture unlike no other country, and has become a mecca for academia in the arts and sciences.

Like many students on this trip, this will be my first time overseas. I am nervous and anxious about having this newfound freedom, yet this uncertain feeling is overcome by overwhelming excitement. I am very much a planner at heart and by preparing ahead I feel like I will be more at ease. I have done extensive planning on weekend trips such as to Cinque Terre, Pisa, Venice, Rome, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast; based on my research, buying the Italy rail pass would be the most convenient and affordable way to explore the country. In addition, I have mapped out restaurants, museums, churches, and all other tourists attractions that are in walkable distance from my apartment in Florence.

Even though I still have week to go, packing is already underway. From printing passports, insurance cards, booking information to buying adapters and converters, there is much to prepare for. Hopefully in the next update I will be settling into my home away from home for the summer!
