Post 1: Flights, Frights, and Friends

Before I explain why this is titled what it is, I want to introduce myself. My name is Tara Basile. I am a rising senior majoring in Marketing, currently studying for my LSATs and applying to law schools as my dream is to be an attorney. I came to Florence to meet new people and grow myself spiritually, physically, and mentally. Now onto the fun stuff. The night before I was supposed to fly out from West Palm Beach Florida to JFK they canceled my flight so I spent the night before my flight planning and rearranging all my connections so that I could make it on time to Florence for check-in. Thankfully, everything worked out, however, I was sprinting through passport checks and terminals to make my flights since the only available ones were scheduled so close together. So note to yourself, give yourself at least 2 hours of a layover when connecting ANYWHERE!

I had a lot of concerns, and while writing this still have concerns about travel, money, and safety, but just being here for two days has softened my anxiety a lot. Prepare to do a lot of walking, and if you do not have service like I did the first day, ask one of your roommates if they have google maps to help you get to places you need to go and back to your flat and I’m sure they will be more than happy to help. My biggest fear is getting lost. I’m sure I will update you all when it happens because it is bound to happen, but I have met so many people I don’t feel alone, which was another fright. The biggest fright that is still getting to me is the language barrier, definitely study before you come! Still scared I will continue to constantly point at things I want at the bakery but that’s okay.

Lastly, the best part of this trip already is all the new friends I have made. All of my flatmates are really nice and we do everything together and even share some of the same courses. It is very reassuring to know I have these people to rely on i a country where I know nobody. We are already planning weekend trips together. I am excited for these six weeks!

I’ll Keep Ya Posted! xoxo Tara
