Beginning my Journey to Travel to Iceland
Hello! My name is Daisy Perez, I am currently a junior at USF on the Tampa campus and will be graduating in Spring 2022. I am majoring in Environmental Science and Policy, as I have a huge passion for sustainability. I will be traveling to Iceland for 10+ days with the GREEN Program, which is an affiliate program. Iceland is almost completely self-sustainable using geothermal, hydropower, and other clean energy sources. This is amazing for an entire country to use renewable energy. I hope after college to be working with businesses and government agencies to create sustainable policies that will be mutually beneficial to the environment and businesses. I hope to learn exactly that from my study abroad program! Unfortunately, as a direct result of COVID-19, my study abroad program was split into two parts, Study now and travel later. Meaning, during the Summer of 2021, I will be taking a 4-week online course or the “study” portion of the program. So in December 2021, when it is safe to travel, I will be physically going to Iceland to fully immerse myself in the culture and experiences. Traveling to Iceland in December I will be able to experience Christmas in a different country, the Northern Lights, and much more! This is a very amazing and unique option because I will still have the opportunity to learn from the best professors in Iceland in an online setting but also experience the country when it is safe to do so.
During this program, I hope to accomplish learning Icelandic, creating sustainable policies, and how to transition a country into renewable energy. None of this would be possible without these scholarships: Genshaft/Greenbaum Passport Scholarship for Summer 2021, Study Abroad Scholarship for Summer 2021, Provost’s Scholars Program, Ace Summer 2021 Study Abroad Scholarship. Thank you to everyone and every program that is making this lifelong goal a reality!!!! Stay tuned, as I navigate my online program within a week, then in December travel to Iceland!
