Here at the University of Exeter the first week of classes is called Fresher’s week, where all the different societies have a variety of events and socials around campus and throughout the city. Societies are the equivalent of clubs and student organizations and they’re a great way to get involved and meet new people. I have joined two societies so far, both of which take you on trips throughout the neighboring cities and have socials throughout the semester. For the first weekend, all of the international students went to St. Ives, a beautiful coastal town where we explored all of its different beaches and shops. Definitely worth visiting!
In terms of academics, I was worried I was not going to be able to get used to the different education system, but after a couple of weeks I can say that there was no reason to stress. In many of my classes lectures are given by different scientists every week which makes it even more interesting, and it gives you a grasp on how the material ties into real world scenarios.
It has only been two weeks, but I am so eager to explore new places and travel to different destinations that sometimes I forget that I have a full six months here and that I don’t have to do everything immediately. Academics are definitely a priority for me, but I also want to make the most of my time here and experience the culture and beauty in the UK and its surrounding countries.
