Hello! My name is Lara Wolff and I’m travelling to Marburg, Germany for the fall 2019 semester. I’m a chemistry major and will be graduating this spring, but this semester I’m taking intensive German language classes along with courses counting towards my minor (International Studies). To be completely honest, I’m not much of a writer, but I’m pretty excited for the opportunity to document my journey and share my experiences here!
This actually isn’t going to be my first time in Germany; my freshman year I participated in a study abroad program through the USF Honors college. It involved a spring class taken at USF followed by an approximately two week stay in Osnabrück, Germany after the semester had ended. We also got to visit Berlin, Dresden, and Hamburg. It was an amazing experience but since it was such a short trip, I still felt like a tourist at the end of it. It became my goal to return for a full semester because I wanted to keep learning the German language and just be able to experience everyday life in another country. And now, a little over two years later, that’s really going to happen!
The culture in Germany isn’t terribly different from the United States so I don’t have any wild stereotypes going into this. I’ve also been there before so I have an idea of what to expect. However, the small differences add up and I’m excited to experience and learn about all the little things that really make Germany unique. It’s also going to be interesting to learn about the stereotypes Germans have about Americans.
I’m thankful for my past experience abroad because I feel pretty confident about travelling alone. Last time I made the trip with a group of people from my class at USF, and once we were in Germany our itinerary was mostly scheduled for us. This time, it’s all on me! I won’t lie, I’m still a little nervous, but one of my favorite things about travelling is having to think critically and adapt quickly if plans have to change.
(I actually arrived a few days ago but saved this as a draft rather than actually publishing it…oops. I’ll be making another post soon about my first week in Marburg, and hopefully I’ll start to get a hang of how this blog works. (: )
