Week 3: Making Lifelong Friends

It is so crazy to realize that I am half-way done with my study abroad trip. I have been here in Florence for a total of three weeks now and so much has happened since. Since my last post, I have visited Rome, which was needless to say beautiful. My roommates and I took a tour of the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. All three were breathtaking and encaptured so much history through art. My favorite part was seeing the ‘Creation of Adam’ on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. After we finished our tour, we headed over to see the Colosseum. It is so mind-blowing to be standing on one of the world’s greatest and long-standing piece of architecture. I never thought that I would have the opportunity to go see it in person. Rome is a city that has to be visited when staying in Italy.

All this traveling around Italy has given me the opportunity to get closer with my roommates. We bond through the traveling experience. For example, we all get lost together and find our way home together. We all share the same experiences and can recount the same stories together. On my floor, there are 10 of us. So all together I have 9 roommates. I have hung out with all of them and am certain that these newly made friendships will carry over back home and continue. We all have struggled together, laughed together, and cooked together and with every passing minute, the bond between us grows stronger. You really get to know people well once you have lived with them for a few weeks.

Back at home, I would always struggle with making new friends in my classes because I was too shy. I always expected people to come up to me and make the first move. Here in Florence, my class has about thirty students so it is easier to get to know everyone. I have noticed that the key to making new friends is to put yourself out there and to just be friendly with everyone. You’ll never know what you might share in common with someone!

All in all, I am enjoying my experience here and can’t wait to see what the next three weeks have in store for me! Ciao!
