This week has been one of the most exciting weeks so far here in Florence, Italy! Not only were we able to spend the entire week exploring the beautiful city of Sienna, we also had our very first surgical observations at the Careggi teaching Hospital in Florence! This was hands down the most interesting experience so far. I was able to observe a gender reconstruction surgery from male to female as well as view a robotic prostatectomy. All of the doctors and staff at the hospital were more than willing to explain each part of the surgeries during out time there and were very good at answering all of our questions! I have never been so inspired by their hard work and passion for their areas of specialty. While surgery is not the specific area of medicine I want to go into, I still found this experience to be very exciting and eye opening when thinking about what it would be like to be a doctor. I couldn’t be more grateful for this experience already, and I can not wait to see what more is to come!
Until next time!
