Going Places Blog Post 1: I’m Going To Paris!

Hey USF Community, my name is Jake Weinstein. I’m a Junior at USF, currently pursuing my BFA in Fine Arts. I’m an Illustrator, a music producer, and an app designer, and I have recently enrolled in an education abroad program to travel and study art in Paris, France for a month. In addition, I will also be taking classes in Venice, Italy for a week.

The first time that I became interested in this trip was when the trip leader, Lou Marcus, came to my art history class. He showed a slide show to our class that exhibited all of the great things that Paris and this education abroad trip had to offer, like getting to know another culture on a personal level, losing yourself to the enormity of the experience, and finding new strength by overcoming the challenge of being a foreigner in a city that doesn’t speak your language.

I was nervous at the beginning to really commit to this trip, but in the end I made the decision to go for it because Paris and Venice are cities that I have always wanted to see. When I was little, I dreamed of exploring places that I have never gone before, and the opportunity had finally come.

I signed up for this trip and submitted all the paperwork, and now, I am ready for my excursion.

I have been researching places that I want to visit while in the city. The places that I am most anticipating are the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, The Catacombs of Paris, The Pompidou, and the Musee D’Orsay. These places all are special to me because they offer amazing art, captivating views of the city, and the ability to look into the past in terms of how artists perceived the world.

While on the trip, I also want to give myself to the culture and experience life as a Parisian and Venetian. The length of the trip is important, because it really gives you enough time to become a part of the culture that you are inhabiting. If I was only in Paris for a week, it wouldn’t be nearly enough time to become acclimated to the place that I am living in. I hope that this trip allows me to feel at home away from home, if you know what I mean.

I really hope that I can visit the places that I want to visit and find the experiences that I want to have, all the while making new friends and new art. I believe that this trip will be the perfect experience for me at this time in my life.
