Hi Everyone! My name is Lauren and I went to the Dominican Republic in December 2016.
I went with a group of students from all over the U.S. along with a few from Canada and Australia. During my program we had a lot of free time to talk about our lives at school, what we want to do after we graduate, as well as the recent election. There was an intern on my program from Australia named Georgia, and she brought up how her and her friends were watching the elections intensely. She joked that they were probably just as engulfed in the election as Americans. Once the results were finalized, Georgia said that her peers were very passionate about learning the ins and outs of the election, which made her feel a strong connection to our country.
Georgia has never been to the US, but she is definitely a woman who is attracted to the idea of living your dream and fulfilling all the goals that you have. We spent one of the nights talking about our goals and Georgia mentioned how she would love to come to the US and work for a non-governmental organization (NGO). I was surprised by her excitement towards eventually moving to the US, since I myself have the desire to work abroad. Talking to Georgia made me realize that we are a country built on dreams and motivation and that it is important to keep our focus on our on goals especially as students.
